This space provides documentation for Asterisk 13. As a Long Term Support (LTS) release of Asterisk, this version has the following milestones:

MilestoneDate
Initial Beta Release08/11/2014
Initial Release10/24/2014
End of Maintenance Window10/24/2020
End of Security Fix Window10/24/2021

As an LTS release, development for this release of Asterisk focussed on improvements to the architectural features introduced in Asterisk 12 as well as new features that aid in usability. In particular, feature development focussed on the following:

  • Extensions and new capabilities for the PJSIP stack and channel driver.
  •  New resources, events, and functionality for the Asterisk REST Interface (ARI).
  • Performance improvements in Asterisk's handling of media.
  • Many small enhancements to AMI, dialplan applications, and other interfaces that improve the overall usability of Asterisk.

A large number of features that have gone into Asterisk 13 were also made periodically during the life-cycle of Asterisk 12. While these changes were introduced periodically, for the purposes of Asterisk 13, all new features that were introduced mid-stream in Asterisk 12 are listed on the New in 13 page.

It is highly recommended that users of Asterisk upgrading to Asterisk 13 read the UPDATE notes.

As Asterisk 13 is built on the major architectural changes that were done as part of Asterisk 12, users upgrading to Asterisk 13 should also read the notes on Upgrading to Asterisk 12. In particular, users of AMI, CDRs, and CEL should read the respective specifications to assist with the behavioural changes, as these interfaces/reporting mechanisms underwent significant changes since the last LTS release.
